In April of 2004 the Abu Ghraib prison photos were published for the world to see. People were shocked and horrified at these pictures. These pictures not only made Americans realize just how bad the war in Iraq was and greatly increased the dislike of the American occupation. These were pictures of prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison located west of Baghdad. This prison was built in the 1960’s and was greatly used during Saddam’s rule. There aren’t any photos from this era only data points showing hundreds of people being executed over the course of one day. Before the U. S took over the prisoners were held in 4 meters by 4 meters concrete cells, which held up to 40 people. Once the U.S took over the prison they held prisoners captive in tents, eventually returning to concrete because of the dust. Like Hussein the United States tortured victims, they were forced into sexually abusive and humiliating positions. Some of the Abu Ghraib pictures involved American soldiers posing with their thumbs up in front of dead or tortured Iraqi detainees. They also involved pictures of execution rooms and torture procedures. As Bush saw these pictures he too was horrified and stated that anyone found at fault of this would be punished.
